Facts about WhatsApp are as of October 2026.
The phone number
WhatsApp is built around your phone number. It is how you register, how people find you, and, until usernames arrive for everyone, what other members of a group can see. IronCircles has no phone number to show anyone: signup is a username and a password.
The business model
WhatsApp is part of Meta, whose business is advertising. In 2025 Meta began showing ads in WhatsApp’s Updates tab. Meta says personal messages stay end-to-end encrypted and are not used for ads, but the account, its metadata and its activity sit inside a company that sells attention.
IronCircles has no ads and no advertising business. It is paid for by an optional Privacy+ subscription and optional IronCoin purchases.
For families and friend groups
A WhatsApp group is a chat. Photos go into the chat, plans go into the chat, and anything else lives in other apps. An IronCircles circle is a small private network: albums at full resolution, a calendar with RSVPs, shared lists, votes, the family recipes and multiplayer games, all inside the same encryption, with members deciding who joins.
Questions
Is WhatsApp private?
WhatsApp personal and group chats are end-to-end encrypted. It does require a phone number, belongs to Meta, and shows ads in its Updates tab.
What is a private alternative to WhatsApp for families?
IronCircles gives a family its own encrypted circle for chat, photo albums, calendars and lists, with no phone number and no ads.
