1. Who can read the messages?
If a service can read your group chat, so can anyone who breaches it, works there or legally compels it. End-to-end encryption means messages are encrypted on the sender’s device and decrypted only on the members’ devices.
Check that the encryption covers groups, not just one-to-one chats, and that it is on by default. Several popular apps encrypt calls but not text, or offer encryption only in a special mode.
2. What does the company know about you?
Encryption hides content, not context. A phone number, contact list, IP address and location tell a story on their own. The most private app collects the least to begin with.
IronCircles signup is a username and a password: no phone number, no email, no real name, no contacts. We do not log IP addresses or location.
3. Who decides who joins?
A group is private only if its members control it. In many apps one admin adds anyone, or a link passed around lets strangers in. In IronCircles, existing members vote newcomers in. Nobody joins a circle without the members’ permission.
4. How does the app make money?
If the answer is advertising, your attention and your data are the product, even when the messages themselves are encrypted. IronCircles has no ads. It is paid for by an optional Privacy+ subscription and optional IronCoin purchases.
5. What does it keep, and for how long?
Group chats outlive the moment. Look for disappearing messages, one-time-view media and the ability to hide a conversation entirely. IronCircles has all three, plus hidden chats locked behind their own key.
6. Is it a group chat, or a group?
Friend groups do more than talk. They plan trips, vote on restaurants, share full-resolution video and play games. When those pieces live in different apps, each app sees a slice of your group. An IronCircles circle holds messages, photos and video, events with RSVPs, shared lists, votes and multiplayer games in one encrypted space.

Questions
What is the most private group chat app?
Look for end-to-end encryption that covers groups by default, signup without a phone number, member-controlled joining, and no advertising. IronCircles meets all four.
Are IronCircles group chats end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. Every circle is end-to-end encrypted, using ML-KEM-1024 post-quantum key exchange in a double ratchet and XChaCha20-Poly1305 for each message.
Can someone join an IronCircles group without permission?
No. People are invited, and the circle’s existing members vote them in.
