Messaging Without a Phone Number

Why apps ask for your number

Phone numbers are convenient for the app. They make signup quick, cut down on spam accounts, and let the app scan your contacts to find people you already know. That convenience has a cost.

• A number links your account to your legal identity through your carrier.
• Your contact list, uploaded for "find friends", maps your relationships.
• Anyone you share a group with may see your number.
• Numbers are recycled and can be hijacked through SIM swapping.

Usernames are not the same as no number

Several apps now let you hide your number behind a username. That helps with the people you chat with, but as of October 2026 most of them still require a number to register, so the service still has it. Signal began testing registration without a phone number on Android in September 2026, as an optional paid path; the default remains a phone number. WhatsApp began rolling out usernames in 2026, but registration still uses a number.

How IronCircles works without one

IronCircles signup is a username and a password. That is all: no phone number, no SIM, no email address, no real name.

Your encryption keys are generated on your device during setup and never leave it. People reach you through circles you join, not through a contact list. Nobody can look you up by your number because we do not have it.

The one identifier we keep is a device ID, so we can send a "you have a new message" notification.

The tradeoff to know about

Without a phone number or email, there is no "text me a reset code" fallback. Your password and your device are your account. IronCircles includes encrypted backups and recovery options, but you should store your password somewhere safe, such as a password manager.
